Do you account for recovery time?

Published 11 months ago • 2 min read

Hello Reader,

Do you also notice that vacations are great until you get home and have to deal with everything that piled up while you were gone? Like loads of laundry from the trip, and piles of mail, possibly piles of e-mail too, an over grown lawn and more? It can make your vacation peace vanish in an instant!

It's tempting to squeeze as much vacation as possible into your limited, precious time off, but if this homecoming stress happens for you too, it's time to start accounting for it in your vacay plans.

I've heard people joke that they need a vacation from their vacation. Sometimes you have to squeeze a ton in your trip because who knows if you'll ever be back. That can make your vacation less than relaxing, and then to come home and jump right back into work...whew! It's exhausting just thinking about it!

So if you get overwhelmed by all the to-dos when you return home from a trip, budget some extra time off at home to deal with them. That's what I did after my 3 week transatlantic cruise. Here's a video with details on how I did it:

It isn't just vacation that you need to plan recovery time for. Any stressful, high intensity event needs it, such as work travel, a big presentation or meeting, even the end of the school year.

Most schools are winding down next week in the KC area, and if there's one message I could give to every teacher, student, and parent it's this: recovery time is necessary & healthy so allow the first few days or weeks after school ends for decompression. Keep your scheduled obligations light, and don't be surprised if you need more sleep or time to just zone out than usual. You worked hard and you deserve a break!

Happy Monday Reader! The Pareto Principal. The 80/20 rule. These are both ways of saying that the bulk of our success comes from a small amount of our actions. That 80% of our results come from 20% of our work. And in other words...80% of our work is not productive! That can be a hard pill to swallow. But let's flip the script on that (as I do with all my clients)--If we can discover what those few vital actions are that drive the majority of our success, we can spend more of our time on...
